Instructor: Emily Freeman
Cost: $490.00 for 4 workshop dates
Workshop dates: See below all 4 sessions
Workshop times: 2pm-4pm
In this four week art class series, your child will learn about textures, colors, and use different types of art media to create group and solo projects. Join us for all four weeks or select your favourite book and join us those weeks only. These projects will be based on four books either written by Maine authors, or that tell a story that takes place in Maine. Over the course of the class, attendees will be given the opportunity to practice valuable skills such as using scissors, tracing, painting, gluing, working together, problem solving and more, all while having fun!
Date: July 14-16; 3 day camp (Tuesday-Thursday); Time: 2pm – 4pm
Week One: Blueberries for Sal – In our very first week of art camp, we will read our first book about Maine! Blueberries for Sal is a classic book that brings together the love for Maine summers and blueberries, along with some curious wildlife and a little girl who is eager to eat as many morsels as she can. To bring this to life with art, your children will be making buckets out of clay, exploring the textures of cork and cotton balls while “stamping” blueberries, and bringing life to the black bear by painting with anything but paint brushes!
Date: July 21-23; 3 day camp (Tuesday-Thursday); Time: 2pm – 4pm
Week Two: Miss Rumphius: In week two, we will read Miss Rumphius, which is yet another book that many locals have probably grown up reading. It talks about the natural beauty of our great state, with a special focus on the lupines that pepper the coast. We will make two different types of lupines, one being a group project and the other will encourage your children to get creative with colorful buttons. We’ll also make our own little homes out of popsicle sticks and talk about what your child would do/does to make the world a more beautiful place.
Date: August 4-6; 3 day camp (Tuesday-Thursday); Time: 2pm – 4pm
Week Three: Camping Spree with Mr. Magee – In week three, our book is Camping Spree with Mr. Magee is a book about a man and his dog who go camping for a night, and there are adventures around every corner. To tie our projects into this fun book filled with rhymes, we will make tissue paper campfires, binoculars to spot any critters, and make a special treat for the critters at your own homes.
Date: August 11-13; 3 day camp (Tuesday-Thursday); Time: 2pm – 4pm
Week Four: The Little Fisherman – In our final week of art camp, we will read a book by Margaret Wise Brown called The Little Fisherman. This book tells the tales of a big fisherman and a little fisherman that does everything the big one does, even though he is smaller. I think this teaches us an important lesson that even if you are small, you can still be mighty! Your child will participate in a group sailboat mural where we all work together to create a whimsical scene. We will also make “wiggly fish”, and be sure the sailboats can make it home at night by fashioning our very own lighthouses.
